The poor state of the British economy will impose a "straitjacket" on an incoming Conservative administration for several years if the party wins the next election, shadow chancellor George Osborne has warned. Mr Osborne told The Guardian that the "complete economic mess" left by Gordon Brown would "cast a long shadow" over British politics, prompting the Tories to think "very hard" about what they will do in government.

Almost a quarter of the population will be in fuel poverty by next year and those on low incomes will be especially badly hit, new figures have showed. LONDON (Reuters) - Nationwide Building Society, one of Britain's biggest home-loan leaders, said on Sunday that it was in advanced talks over proposed mergers with both the Derbyshire and the Cheshire Building Societies. The Nationwide, Britain's largest building society, has 179 billion pounds of assets and around 900 branches.
